What Food & Beverage Companies Are in the Top 100 ?

The recession that our country now faces started in 2008. However, looking at the sales records of the top food and beverage companies in the United States and Canada, you will surprise you. Every year, Food Processing puts out its annual Food Processing Top 100 list- a report of the top 100 food and beverage companies in the US and Canada based on their sales. On the 2009 list, only 1 of the top 27 companies reported a decrease in sales from 2007 to 2008. 16 of those same top 27 companies showed not just an increase in gross revenue, but also in net income, leaving just 11 companies that fell flat in 2008.

At the top of the list is Nestle, who saw an incredible 14 percent increase in sales in the United States and Canada. This came out to over $200 BILLION (that’s a “B”!) in sales. Do you think that’s a lot of chocolate? Well, in recent years, Nestle has branched out from it’s candy business it’s so well known for and has been producing healthy food choices as well.

Although, some companies on the top 100 did very well for themselves in 2008, others, such as Pilgrim’s Pride (the number 12 company) had sales that plummeted. Despite reporting a nearly $1Billion increase in sales, the company filled a Chapter 11 when they announced a $999 Million loss due to high feed-ingredient cost, an over supply of chicken, weak market pricing and a softening demand for their products.
